The challenge:

Students of Kaka Street Special School were left without a place to learn when an electrical fire destroyed a detachable double classroom block based at Tauranga Intermediate School.
Currently catering to 11 special needs students and six staff, principal Barrie Wickens says that there was no alternative option and new, safe facilities had to be constructed right away.
The solution:

“The Ministry of Education acted quickly on our request for new facilities and put a tender out to three temporary building providers,” says Mr. Wickens “Portacom Building Solutions won the contract due to its cost effective pricing and ability to deliver the large size we needed, and I am personally so pleased.”
Portacom Building Solutions worked closely with the Kaka Street School principal Mr. Wickens and Tauranga Intermediate principal Brian Diver and his team of caretakers to design and deliver a large classroom and an office block in just three weeks.
The office block and the open plan classroom, made up of three modular buildings, were constructed in the Portacom Building Solutions Auckland manufacturing site.
Neil McLean, from Portacom Building Solutions explains “although we were under a tight time frame we ensured that the buildings were fit for purpose - each room is carpeted, has heat pumps, tinted windows, and the walls are lined with a felt material which is perfect for displaying their visual art.”
“We also constructed and installed a surrounding covered deck, veranda, and ramp to provide students and teachers with an indoor/outdoor flow,” he says.
The result:

“It was a problem-free, quick, and efficient process from start to finish – council consent along with the necessary fire and engineer reports were issued, and we were back in teaching in the new facility within just 42 days of the fire”, states Mr. Wickens.
“Neil and his team should be commended on their service, it was truly exemplary and I would recommend them to any school wanting to re-house their students either short or long-term - the buildings Portacom Building Solutions provides are ideal for both.”
Kaka Street Special School intends to use their new buildings for as long as they are required, but as the buildings and its surrounding decks and ramps are modular and easily transportable, the Ministry of Education also has the option to uplift and re-use them for other purposes.
