Fulton Hogan Tekapo Canal Remediation

Tekapo  Tekapo  Tekapo
The challenge
In October of 2012 Fulton Hogan received the contract to establish a site for Genesis Energy to carry out repairs to the leaking Tekapo Canal.
The project, estimated to cost around $125 million, involves lowering Lake Tekapo while temporary coffer dams are set up and the necessary remediation work is carried out to protect the canal for the next 50 years.
Genesis Energy asked Fulton Hogan to set up construction management facilities and worker facilities for up to 150 on-site staff.  With work due to commence by January 2013, on a remote site in the middle of the Mackenzie Basin, Fulton Hogan needed help, and fast.
The solution
Pete Reid, Quarries and Industries Divisional Manager at Fulton Hogan says there was never any question about who to contact to help establish the required facilities.
“I called Phil Botting at Portacom Building Solutions as they have provided quality site office complex’s for several of our other projects across New Zealand in record time”.
In just ten short weeks Portacom Building Solutions worked with both Fulton Hogan and Genesis Energy to design, construct, and set up a large office complex and a separate lunchroom, ablution block, and a drying room. The main office complex is made up of seven modular buildings, all linked together to provide a central and covered open plan area.
Phil Botting, Portacom Building Solutions South Island Manager explains, “we enjoy the challenges remote projects throw up such as this one – being two hours away from anywhere meant we had to plan our needs carefully, making sure we had all the right materials and people on site at specific times so things could run smoothly.”
“And by staging the build, Genesis Energy were able to use the main office building almost immediately while we worked on setting up the remaining facilities.”
The result
The first stage of the repairs to the Tekapo Canal were completed ahead of schedule and Mr. Reid attributes some of this to having the right facilities for management and site workers to go about their business.
“Fulton Hogan and Genesis Energy like the result - the open plan office creates a favourable working environment, and we are grateful to Portacom Building Solutions for achieving such a great result in such a short space of time.”
“Over this year Portacom Building Solutions will deliver us more buildings, about 10 in total, as the canal repair work reaches capacity and more staff come on board,” says Mr. Reid.
