The challenge:

The growing community in Te Totara, Hamilton were in need of educational and quality childcare for the increasing number of young families in the area. Funded by the Ministry of Education, the Barnardos Early Learning Centre approached Portacom Building Solutions with their unique problem – a learning centre for 50 children delivered over the Christmas period.
There were several challenges for the project. The site itself had limited access and was situated on the grounds of an existing school, in a newly developed sub-division.
Poor draining at the site added another obstacle. Large soak holes were constructed to disperse storm water and excess rain water and ensure structural stability.

The solution:

The project was delivered over 17 weeks during the Christmas holidays to ensure all works occurred between school terms so as not to disrupt the school or pose a danger to children.
The team at Portacom Building Solutions worked closely with the client through each obstacle to ensure the building was completed and handed over within budget.

The result:

The result was a 330 square metre permanent building with many different rooms designed specifically for the needs of an early learning centre.
Areas included:

  • Large open multi-purpose rooms and play areas with connecting doors
  • Spacious kitchen with plenty of preparation bench space
  • Sleeping areas
  • Specially designed bathrooms and nappy change areas
  • Art area with sinks
  • Locker rooms
  • Staff room with kitchenette
  • Roomy reception area
  • Laundry and outdoor storage areas

Due to the nature of the project, custom fittings and finishes were carefully sourced to ensure the comfort and safety of the children, staff and parents who will utilise the building for generations to come.
The successful delivery of the project allowed local families to enrol their children in a safe environment and return to work earlier than anticipated.
